Frequently Asked Questions

What are my right as a tenant in California?

Tenants in California have many legal rights. If the tenant lives with bug infestations, roaches, mice, or structural hazards such as damaged walls, floors, or unstable ladders, etc, and these conditions are not caused by the tenant, the landlord is not fulfilling their obligations, and the tenant may seek legal remedy.

Can I be evicted for making a claim?

No, vengeful evictions are illegal.

What kind of compensation could I receive?

Depending on the circumstances of the case, tenants living in poor conditions could receive compensation for overpayment of income, expenses caused by infestations such as lost funriture, food, or other personal items, and/or money spent by the tenant in the fight against infestations because the owner refused to fight infestations.

If I am not in this country legally, do I still have the right to file a claim?

Yes. Everyone has the right to live in healthy conditions, regardless of their legal status.
